I used to live near a tiny village in Norfolk, England which was pretty similar, with all the residents trying to put on the most elaborate show. It got quite well known and tour operators taking passengers to a nearby annual Carol Concert would divert to drive through the village after the show. Some bright spark decided they would stop the buses and demand a toll in aid of charity and it became a minor news event. I think it still goes on.
