I am using a borrowed 100mm 2.8 EF on my Canon 60D and getting quite nice results. My best shots though are actually more what I would call semi macro taken of larger items such as dragonflies with my new 200mm 2.8L. See link:

This is a new area for me and I would love some feedback.

Also if anyone has used the Canon 180 L or other macro lens I would like to know what your feelings on these are.

I need to look at lighting - the Canon system is out of my price league - has anyone a cheaper option?

thanks

Depending on the local availability of the materials, this YouTube tutorial on fabricating your own macro ring flash may appeal to you Steve. The finished product looks very professional.

The tutorial looks very good. This flash would also be pretty handy for portrait work as well. It is a bit bulky and I see some problems if you are working in confined or heavily vegetated places but you can't have everything

For those that are interested I just got a "Lite genius" from the States. This certainly is the best diffuser I have tried so far. Again there is alays a downside - needs to be kept in its original shape.
