I like the thought of portability and hands free gear etc. This idea for a monopod works well. I got it from somewhere so I can't claim the credit but I have modified it a bit.

My problem is that I know I should use a tripod but cant stand the inconvenience and restrictions it places on me.

This system works well although it does have a a downside (isn't there always one?). You do have something flapping about beside your thigh. However it also means it doesn't have to be held in the hand and is instantly available.

Gret a cheap monopod. Cut it down so it collapses to about a total length of 12ins. You need to attach a strap to this to form a loop. Attach at one end by an eye ring screwed securely into the foot of the monopod. Then you adjust the strap (a luggage strap is good) so that you can swing the pod up, attach your camera at the head and pull down against the strap which results in the whole contraption being braced.

I just found a link to the system: http://cheesycam.com/diy-cheesycam-bodypod-15/

Great for travelling.

Hi Steve, it's me again, thank's for the info on this idea, I have a Benro mono, a Freebee when I bought my 5D, which is 17" closed, a little on the heavy side, but I think worth aquiring a support strap from somewhere, drill a hole in the foot for a 'D' ring and give it a try, if it feels ok then shorten it.
