Subject: Facebook: For Sharing Field Trip Photos & Info General posted by JohnShedrick on Thursday, April 21st 2011 @ 6:18 PM
To generate the max amount of interest in our planned group outings, I think we need to do more than just announce the details and summaries of our trips.
We need to share pictures. If we have them, photos of what to expect will stir our group's interest in coming along. Then, the sharing of photos that were taken is the main reason for going. OK, we do get to show some photos at our meetings, sometimes the time is limited.
The point is; the internet is the ideal medium for this. Our iGroops website gallery is much less than ideal for this. Those members who have voiced an opinion so far are mostly in favor of using Facebook to advertize and share photos of field trips.
CMPG already has a Facebook page with a group of us already using it. I'm new to Facebook myself, but have been using it for a couple weeks now and am convinced that it will work well for our intended purpose. It's very easy and straightforward to use.
It's free and simple to join. The only information you're required to provide is your Name, e-mail address and birthdate.
There are just a few things that some of you might be intimidated by. I'm hoping that a discussion on this forum will lessen the resistance you may have about joining and participating.
My biggest concern was invasion of privacy. I think it's already established that Facebook collects peoples data for whatever purposes they can profit from. (Feel free to correct me). They also claim the right to use any images and information that is posted on their site. They probably already know more about you and your friends than you would like.
I decided that as long as I'm smart enough not to add more personal info that they don't need to know, and if I limit the file sizes of any images I upload, then I should be safe to enjoy the benefits they provide.
Bottom Line: We've made the decision to try Facebook as an added means of increasing interest in field trips. You're all encouraged to join our Chiang Mai Photographic Group on Facebook so you can take part in the viewing and sharing of the photos and info from our members. (Those not signed up are not able to view the posts.) We'll continue to use iGroops, blog and forum just as we have been to communicate, so no one will be left out of the loop.
