Not certain if this works on the 40D, but on the 10D you can take a shot, then press the PLAYBACK (bottom left (>) button), then press INFO. A number will come up on the top right, in format xxx-xxxx. The last four should be how many clicks it's got. Also, a Canon Service Center can tell for sure.
